An online digital platform launched by the Greek tax authorities called “appodixi” has been inundated with citizen complaints linked to tax evasion. According to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IARP), over 215,000 complaints have been registered to date, with the vast majority of those being anonymous.
The app allows citizens to cross-reference the receipts they are issued in every transaction. Through it, every receipt that has been issued with a QR code is scanned. If citizens find non-transmission or discrepancy in the receipt’s details, they can send it to the IAPR – anonymously or by name – for further control.
The data indicates that roughly 180,000 citizens have used the smartphone app to file complaints about receipts, over 100,000 of which are anonymous, and 85,835 are with identified names.
In an effort to encourage the use of the application, Greek tax authorities pledged a financial bonus between €100 and €3,000.
However, despite the countless complaints, no citizen is yet eligible for the bonus, as no cases of tax evasion were verified by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR).
The appodixi digital platform produced 28,910 complaints, of which 3,879 are anonymous, and 25,031 are eponymous, all of which are ineligible for the financial rewards. Of these, 25,573 concern tax violations, 340 involve customs violations, and 2,997 concern cases of corruption involving AADE employees.
